Fumed Cherry Shift Knob #104

51mm dia. x 78mm
Cherry first came to my attention through photography. This was the wood most favored for making cameras in the 1800's because of its strength and stability. Over time, with exposure to light, cherry turns a rich red color. This piece was fumed with amonia vapor to produce the dark color. This is the technique used 100 years ago on Arts & Crafts era Mission Oak furniture. I believe that fumed oak is what the MINI "English Oak" is supposed to be like.

This knob was sanded with 1,500 grit silicon carbide paper and buffed to a high polish. Numerous coats of hand-rubbed Polyurethane were applied to seal the wood and protect it. The hand-rubbed method allows the finish to penetrate into the grain without leaving a plastic-looking coating over the surface.

Care: Typically, no special care is needed. Cleaning can usually be accomplished by rubbing with a soft cloth. If more aggressive methods are required, a damp cloth, or furniture cleaner can be used. If you wish to wax it, I recommend Renaissance Wax which was develeoped for the British Museum. It provides a hard clear finish.
